Tucked between the excitement of celebration and the hustle of preparation, Christmas Eve often arrives quietly.
It is a pivotal moment that is profoundly significant but not precisely the season’s high point. A gap between the past and the future.
This year, I’m making a different decision rather than adding more to my plate.
I’ve decided to pause, Not as a way out, Not as apathy, But as a deliberate effort of introspection, appreciation, and harmony.
The Significance of the Pause
Our society encourages constant motion. Productivity is commended. Busyness is praised. We frequently put off resting until we are too tired to do so.
We race to fulfil deadlines, purchase gifts, attend parties, finish tasks, and make everything appear “complete,” especially during holiday seasons.
However, something kinder is invited on Christmas Eve.
It challenges us to pause long enough to pay attention to our hearts, thoughts, feelings, and faith.
The purpose of the pause is not to do nothing.
Reflection is the key to doing the correct thing
Reflecting on the Year That Was
This Christmas Eve, when I take a moment to reflect on the year, I am doing so honestly rather than with an eye toward perfection.
- The times I exhibited bravery in the face of overwhelming fear
- The times I felt stained, overwhelmed, or uncertain
- The lessons concealed inside setbacks
- The growth that occurred gradually and quietly rather than noisily
Some prayers received the exact response that was anticipated. Others were answered with wait, redirect, or not yet.
And looking back, I see wisdom in both.
We learn from reflection that development isn’t always straight forward.
Growth isn’t usually accompanied by festivities. Growth might sometimes appear as endurance. It appears to be restraint at times. It appears to be learning to let go at times.
Choosing Presence Over Perfection
Presence is one of the most potent things that “Pausing” offers us.
Being present with our families.
Being present with our kids.
Being present with our partners.
Being present with ourselves.
This season serves as a reminder that being completely present is far more important than being perfectly prepared.
The most treasured memories are rarely about how flawless things appeared, but rather about how safe, cherished, and seen we felt.
We can ask ourselves:
- Am I present where I am, or am I constantly rushing ahead?
- Am I actually listening, or just responding?
- Do I feel thankful for the now or worried about the future?
Faith, Stillness, and Meaning
Christmas is fundamentally a tale of silence before meaning. A peaceful evening. a modest environment. A strong arrival that altered everything.
Slowing down enough to recognise that meaning is frequently born in “Quiet” is something sacred.
Stillness creates room for gratitude.
Stillness creates room for faith.
Stillness creates room for clarity.
I’m making the decision to sit with appreciation this Christmas Eve, not just for the victories but also for the lessons learned. Not only for the festivities, but also for the fortitude acquired during the journey.
What the Pause Is Teaching Me
As I reflect, the pause is teaching me several gentle truths:
- Rest is wisdom, not weakness.
- One way to grow is through reflection
- It’s not necessary to carry over everything into the upcoming year.
- Some things are meant to be released before new ones can be received.
Pause allows us to conclude one chapter with purpose and begin a new one with hope
Carrying the Pause Forward
Christmas Eve is not the end of the gift of “Pause”.
I want to keep it in my career, leadership, parenting, loving, and self-care behaviours.
Because continuous motion is not the source of clarity. It originates from quiet times.
And sometimes pausing long enough to listen is the most courageous thing we can do.
I’d like you to take a “Pause” as Christmas Eve approaches.
Not to go over what went wrong, but to recognise your progress.
To honour the journey that led you here, rather than to rush into your next goal.
