I had three young children, all born within four years of my decision to transition into technology, and I didn’t think the timing could have been more difficult (no twins in sight). However, what appeared to be a barrier turned out to be one of my biggest advantages.
Rather than feeling cut off from the working world, I recognized an opportunity during my maternity leave. I started studying in the early mornings before the house woke up or during the peaceful times when the baby was napping. I participated in tech communities, completed online courses, and created little code projects.
Many women fear that motherhood will slow their career dreams, but sometimes, it can give you the perfect window to grow.
I learned time management, resilience, and how to concentrate in short, intense bursts from being a mother, all of which were very helpful in my new tech career. I reframed it as, “This is the perfect time to invest in my future,” rather than, “I can’t do this now”.
Here’s my advice for mothers who are considering a career switch:
1. Make the most of the time you have rather than wishing you had more. Even 30 focused minutes can add up over weeks.
2. Make learning a part of your daily schedule. Use apps that let you learn on the go, watch quick tutorials during nap times, and listen to tech podcasts while you’re feeding the baby.
3. Make use of the discipline that comes with becoming a mother. You will be able to master technology with the same abilities you have acquired from maintaining a home.
Being a mother can be the unexpected boost that helps create your next chapter, so you do not have to put your dreams on hold.
